Ubuntu Lucid Lynx Mobile broadband tethering to Nokia N95 Part 1

This post is a follow up to Ubuntu Hardy Heron Nokia N95 as 3G modem. In particular, this post will describe how to set-up mobile broadband tethering from Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) to a Nokia N95 mobilephone.

More than two years have passed since Ubuntu Hardy, with the corresponding improvements. With Ubuntu Lucid, the set-up of mobile broadband tethering is easier than ever. I will describe two methods of mobile broadband tethering: wired USB, or wireless bluetooth. We began with the simpler wired method, which is pretty much plug’n play.

Wired tethering in Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)

First, connect the mobilephone directly to the Ubuntu PC using a USB cable. Upon connection, the mobilephone will display “Select mode” prompt. Choose the first option, “PC Suite”. Ubuntu will now auto-detect and recognised the mobilephone.

Create new connection

Left-click on the panel’s Network Manager icon. Select the menu item “New Mobile Broadband (GSM) connection…”

New Mobile Broadband Connection 1

This will launch the “New Mobile Broadband Connection Wizard”. Click “Forward” button to continue.

New Mobile Broadband Connection 2

Choose your country.

New Mobile Broadband Connection 3

Choose your broadband service provider.

New Mobile Broadband Connection 4

Choose your billing plan. This will determine the Access Point Name (APN). In my case, the default “internet” is the only option.

New Mobile Broadband Connection 5

Click “Apply” in the final confirmation dialogbox.

You will now see the newly created entry in the Network Manager’s left-click menu.

Edit connection settings

If you made a mistake, or wish to change a setting, right-click on the Network Manager icon and select “Edit Connections…”

Edit Connection 1

In the Network Connections dialogbox, select “Mobile Broadband” tab, select the connection to edit from the listbox, then click on the “Edit” button.

Edit Connection 2

My set-up does not need any change.

Edit Connection 3

But the connection name is bugging me, so I remove the word “Default” .

Edit Connection 4

Dial-up me up Scotty!

Finally, left click on the the Network Manager icon and select the network to establish the dial-up.

Connect

After a few second, you will see a notification about the connection.

Connection Established

That’s it!

In the next post, I will continue with wireless mobile broadband tethering via bluetooth.
