Ubuntu Lucid Lynx bluetooth pairing to Nokia N95

This is a follow up to the post I wrote two years ago about bluetooth pairing in Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex.

Actually, I have my eeePC 900 running Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 for two years straight, almost 6 months past the end of life of that release. Recently, however, I decided it’s time to upgrade to latest version of Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx 10.04) and enjoy the new features and improvements.

The new Ubuntu is quick and a big step forward. This is evident by the significantly reduced number of tweaks I have to investigate and implement post install. But of course, this post is specifically about Bluetooth pairing to a Nokia N95 phone.

Bluetooth hardware

It might already be 2 years since, but the old hardware are still fully functional:

  1. eeePC 900 running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx (fully updated as of 25th September 2010)
  2. Nokia N95 8GB
  3. Chronos USB2.0 Bluetooth V2.1 mini dongle

Bluetooth pairing in Lucid

When the bluetooth dongle is plugged in, the device is recognised automatically and ready for use. An icon (the bluetooth logo) appeared in the notification area.

Left-click on the icon, and select “Set up new device”.

Bluetooth menu: set up new device

The “Bluetooth New Device Setup” wizard appears.

Bluetooth new device setup wizard 1

Enabled bluetooth on your mobile device (in my case, a Nokia N95 mobile phone), and set temporarily to “visible mode”. Then, click the “Forward” button on the wizard.

After a short period of scanning, your bluetooth device should appear in the list. Select it and click the “Forward” button.

The wizard would generate a random PIN code. Your mobile device should now prompt you for this code.

Once you entered the code into the mobile device, you should get the “Success” message on the wizard. Click “Close” and the bluetooth pairing is now completed.

Before continuing any further, you should set the PC as “authorised” in your mobile device. This would avoid the authorisation prompt whenever you make a connection in the future. It might also be advisable to set your mobile device to “hidden mode” again.

That’s all! Very straight forward and simple.
