Transfer files with Nokia N95 via bluetooth

With the improvement of Bluetooth support in Ubuntu Hardy, transferring files to and from Nokia N95 via bluetooth is easy. Also, while this post is specifically on Nokia N95, it is likely other bluetooth phones would work the same.

There are more than one method to copy files via bluetooth; however, I will describe only one method for each direction of file transfer. These are the methods that I personally use myself.

What you need

  1. Ubuntu Hardy PC with one USB port
  2. Nokia N95 8GB
  3. Bluetooth USB device

Bluetooth pairing of phone to PC

As with anything involving bluetooth communication, you have to pair the phone to PC first. I wrote about this process in a previous post here.

Transferring file from phone to PC

Desktop phone icon

I use this method to transfer the photos I took on Nokia N95. First, take some photos (duh!) Then, enable bluetooth on the phone, and connect the PC to the phone.

Double-click the phone icon on your desktop to browser the phone. Find the files in one of the subdirectories. I found my photos in subdirectories of E:/Images.

Browse files in phone

Once you have located the files you are looking for, simply drag-drop them to your local harddrive.

Transferring file from PC to phone

I use this to transfer ring tones to the phone. First, browse your local harddrive to the audio file. Then, right-click on the file and select “Send to…”

Right-click send to

Choose “Bluetooth (OBEX Push)” and your phone identifier. Then, click “Send”.

Send to dialogbox

The Nokia N95 will receive the file as a Bluetooth message in the Messages Inbox.
