With the price of a USB thumbdrive dropping of the cliff, I ended up with a few spares. These little guys were too small (megabytes wise) to be of any use, except for the occasional sneaker-netting. The older ones were quite beat up, after years of use and abuse. I figured it’s time to give them a makeover.

In came the trusty old heat-glue gun to the rescue. You feed this nifty device with soft plastic sticks (the glue), and plugged the gun to an electrical outlet. The gun heated and melted the glue, and you applied it liberally to whatever you fancy.

In this case, I stripped the USB thumbdrive down to its internal board, then coated a large dollop of the glue on both sides. The tricky bit was to be able to smoothen out the surfaces, so that they came out flat and transparent. It took a lot of time, practice and patience. Luckily, you could redo it over if you made a mistake.
The end results? The first one didn’t turn out so good.

The second one was better, but not by much.
